Dear Clients,

As you may already be aware, Facebook is changing its page size from the standard 760 px width to 520 px effective August 23rd (http://developers.facebook.com/blog/post/399). What this means is that your current page, which is designed on a 760 px canvas will automatically be shrunk (breadth-wise) by Facebook come August 23rd. The shrinking will chop off about 1/3 of the original design and it’s content indiscriminately. In order to correct this, Social Cubix is offering its clients a redesign/reprogramming package for 25% of original project cost. This will cover the cost to redesign the page where applicable to fit the 520 px requirement and reprogram the page to accommodate functional features as they appeared originally. Note that you will not be getting a new design scheme but your current design scheme in order to be consistent.

If interested in having your page worked on, please call at 866-978-2220. Typical turn around time is 7 business days which gives ample time to test before Facebook effects its changes. If you have additional questions, please let us know so we may address those. Once again, thanks for partnering with Social Cubix to establish your presence on Facebook.
Best Regards,

Michael Trexler | Social Media Specialist

Formerly a Principal Engineer at Amazon, Darren Vengroff is Chief Scientist at RichRelevance where he helps retailers like Overstock and Sears create a more personal shopping experience for consumers. You can read more from Darren on the RichRelevance blog.

Amazon and Facebook are making headlines with the launch of a new application that allows shoppers to receive product recommendations based on Facebook preferences. Once users enables this app, Amazon is able to monitor their activity on Facebook, including what pages they likes, and use that information to recommend products they are likely to be interested in purchasing. Combining accounts with an application such as this, whether specific to Amazon or other merchants, has the potential to be a compelling hybrid of social networking and shopping that creates value for shoppers and for merchants.

While Amazon’s move made headlines because of their market position, the fact is that any merchant can build an app to allow Facebook users to share their interests. Collecting this data is the easy part. Leveraging it appropriately is where the real challenge lies. Ultimately, the success of the recommendations driven by these apps will be predicated on how relevance is extracted — particularly from the social graph — and how recommendations are presented to shoppers.

While there was a lot of speculation about Facebook’s search strategy, the company has confirmed with us that “all Open Graph-enabled web pages will show up in search when a user likes them”. Earlier this week we published about the new Facebook SEO that’s possible via the Open Graph, but now it’s clear that this is the beginning of Facebook’s internet search strategy. The race is now on for publishers to optimize their sites for Facebook’s search engine.

Earlier this week when we covered the TripAdvisor pages that were showing up in Facebook’s search results, we weren’t able to determine how the information was showing up in Facebook as there didn’t appear to be standard Open Graph data. Instead, the company has some improperly formed meta-tags as detailed by Facebook’s URL Linter. While most sites are not being indexed yet, I’d imagine that there will be a rush for publishers to optimise their sites. Read More

If you want to get your hands on a coveted Facebook hoodie, like the one Mark Zuckerberg was wearing during his interview with Kara Swisher at the D conference, you’re going to have to shell out more than $4,000. That’s because one enterprising employee decided to place his (or her) hoodie up for sale on eBay.

While I’m all for purchasing stylish clothing, dishing out $4,000 for an official Facebook hoodie seems pretty extreme. Then again, there’s no doubt that this hoodie is extremely limited, and it’s doubtful that more of these will be printed anytime soon. Whichever Facebook employee decided to pawn off their hoodie will most definitely have rent taken care of for at least a couple months.

With 48 bids and just over 1 day left on bidding, it’s doubtful that the price will rise much higher. The last bids took place over 4 days ago, so demand for the hoodie has appeared to die down. If you want to dish out over $4 grand on a Facebook hoodie, here is your opportunity to do it.

It also affords our out of state clients the option to fly into either the Washington area airports or BWI. Many thanks to Mark for directing the interior decoration and choice of new space furniture. Yes Mark!

Social Cubix exhibited at the recently concluded Social Media Plus conference, held on May 25, 2010 in Philadelphia. The conference saw a turn out of over 700 individuals representing diverse businesses and organizations interested in learning more about Social Media and building connections. The event was truly remarkable as a lot of learning and interaction was compressed efficiently into one day, in addition to of course, the interesting city of Philadelphia!

Social Media is evidently catching on like wild fire with individuals and brands convincingly coming to the point of agreement that it is indeed the direction to follow to create and promote brand awareness and capitalize on the teeming internet population. We talked with individuals with diverse interests in social media from radio stations to book publishers and major brands that are not satisfied with their current social media engagement and the consensus is that social media the new driver in advertising and monetization online. We were able to present to them, bespoke solutions that are sure to enable them exploit to the maximum extent, the possibilities embedded in social media as applied to their businesses.

Some of the tools that we showcased included interactive Facebook fanpages and how those can be used to gauge and improve fan loyalty, custom developed applications and games, unique promotional campaigns as well as tools to measure performance. We also talked to a lot of folks about mobile applications especially those on iPhone and the Android platforms and the future of mobile advertising. Social Cubix is actually working on a new product that is guaranteed to change the shopping experience on mobile phones like never seen before. Watch this space for more information about the new product.

We also got to talk with some cool companies out there in our space. Joyent was one of the companies that attracted our interest, not because their booth was directly opposite ours, but because the service they offer is useful to some of our solutions. Joyent offers scalable and intelligent cloud hosting for applications especially those built to see high traffic and server processor use. Other companies include MadDash, a video content servicing company looking to go social in very creative ways.

SMP was really enjoyable as we got to help people understand the benefits of social media and also provide them with the practical tools to leverage this new form of media to their advantage. It’s not just a new form of media, it’s becoming a way of life!

The idea, Zuckerberg said, is to make Facebook the center of the increasingly social and more personalized experience that people encounter when they use the Internet. Facebook also wants to make it easier for other websites to share information across Facebook’s user base of more than 400 million people.

“We’re building toward a Web where the default is social, every application and product will be designed from the ground up to use real identity,” he said. Read More
